Snail Care - Giant African Snail

Giant African Land Snail care tips

One of Hedi's friend called Mia has given her a Giant African Snail. She has been keeping it as a pet since May 2019. Mia's mother also gave us a terrarium, and she advises to provide the snail a clean, fresh, warm and damp environment. The ideal temperature is 25°C, and we needed 2 heat mats to achieve this because we are in Estonia and its pretty cold all year round. For the humidity level, Hedi sprays it regularly to maintain its dampness.

We also gave the snail some substrates such as soil or moss for the snail to burrow. Hedi changes these substrate usually around once a week (even though we have one snail). She also gives the terrarium a wiped down regularly, and thoroughly rinsed out about once a month.

The first thing Hedi said in this video is fresh food. Hedi provides a variety of fresh food for the snail ranging from fresh lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, paprika, apple, pear, banana to cabbages. It is also possible to offer your snail some (crushed) dried shrimps. All food are washed and old food are removed after one or two days.

The snail also needs a supply of calcium. Calcium is available at all times and it is good for the shell.

Bathing the snails is done regularly - roughly once a month.
